Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra : ウィキペディア英語版
Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra
The Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra (FMSO) is a professional orchestra based in Fargo, North Dakota. (The city of Moorhead, located immediately to Fargo's east, over the Red River of the North, is across the state border, in Minnesota; together the two cities, along with other nearby communities, form the metropolitan area of Fargo–Moorhead.) The orchestra employs local and regional musicians in performances of classical and modern symphonic music.
What would become the FMSO may be said to have originated in 1912 with a small community orchestra, under the direction of Harry Rudd, showcasing its talents during a Norwegian Saengerfest. That ''ad hoc'' ensemble employed forty musicians.〔"Fargoman" (VirtualTourist ) (Nov. 18, 2005). (''Music to Your Ears'' ), in ''31 Things to Do in Fargo, North Dakota.'' Retrieved February 27, 2013.〕
The current organization, however, actually dates its formal charter to 1931 (operating as the "Fargo Civic Orchestra"). Harry Rudd was named the first official conductor of the newly formed orchestra as well, serving in that capacity through 1937. Subsequent music directors have included:
* Sigvald Thompson (1937–1974), also renowned as a composition teacher (to Peter Schickele,〔(No date.) (''Peter Schickele Bio'' ), at ''The Peter Schickele/P.D.Q. Bach Web Site.'' Retrieved February 27, 2013.〕 among others);
* J. Robert Hanson (1974–1990);〔Concert program: St. Olaf Philharmonia, J. Robert Hanson, conductor (May 5–7, 2007). (''Visiting Professor of Music J. Robert Hanson'' (biographical sketch) ), page 5. Retrieved February 27, 2013.〕
* Joel Revzen (1990–2002);〔(No date.) (''Conductor History: Orchestral/Symphonic – North America'' ), at ''Joel Revzen, Conductor.'' Retrieved February 27, 2013.〕 and
* Bernard Rubenstein (2003–2012), who presided over the FMSO's 75th anniversary celebrations during 2006-2007.〔Piepkorn, Merrill (Prairie Public Broadcasting ) (April 4, 2007). (''75th Anniversary of F-M Symphony'' ), in ''Dakota Datebook.'' Retrieved February 27, 2013.〕 At its gala concert of March 10, 2007, the orchestra premiered Schickele's three-movement ''Prairie Skies,'' a work commissioned for the anniversary.〔Lewis, Darcy (March 18, 2007). (''Violin News & Gossip, Op. 3, No. 22: Orchestra News'' ), at ''Violinist.com - Violin Blogs.'' Retrieved February 27, 2013.〕
In June of 2013, conductor Christopher Zimmerman was chosen as the orchestra's current Music Director by the FMSO board of trustees.〔Combs, Marianne (June 5, 2013). (''FM Symphony names Christopher Zimmerman as new Music Director'' ), at ''State of the Arts: MPR News (Minnesota Public Radio).'' Retrieved June 13, 2014.〕 Maestro Zimmerman is also Music Director of the Fairfax (Virginia) Symphony Orchestra.〔(No date.) (''Christopher Zimmerman - Music Director'' ), at ''Fairfax Symphony Orchestra'' website. Retrieved June 13, 2014.〕
The Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra currently performs some two-dozen times throughout the year in various capacities, including a Pops Concert series, which has been led by Jane Linde Capistran, the associate conductor of the orchestra.〔Concordia College (2015). (''Jane Linde Capistran'' ), in ''Faculty & Staff - Biographies.'' Retrieved April 24, 2015.〕
